Cheapest way to withdraw USD in Ghana.
Receiving USD is half the problem. Converting it to cedis at the lowest all-in cost is the other half — and it is where most guides go quiet, because the cost hides in the FX spread. Ranked by the band each route actually costs on a $1,200/month profile.

How to read a withdrawal quote.
Every provider shows you a fee. Few show you the spread — the gap between their conversion rate and the interbank mid-market rate. On a $1,000 withdrawal, a 2% spread costs more than most advertised fees. The honest comparison is total out-of-pocket: quoted fee + (mid-rate minus their rate) × amount + flat charges. That is the number the calculator produces; it is also why we quote bands rather than single figures — your cashout amount and timing inside the band move you.
MoMo cashout is a tariff, not an FX rate. Post-e-levy (abolished 2 April 2025), MTN's send/withdraw tariffs remain — typically 1.5-5% for amounts freelancers actually withdraw. It wins on speed (minutes) and loses on large amounts. Batch: one larger withdrawal beats four small ones when flats apply.
SWIFT is the emergency rail. $15-50 intermediary + receiving bank FX spread 1-4% means a $500 SWIFT withdrawal can lose 5-17%. Use it once, learn the fee schedule, then move to a direct rail. The receive-from-abroad guide covers the full setup order: receive → hold → withdraw.
Withdrawal math, not marketing rates.
The calculator applies the corridor band to your withdrawal frequency and amount — midpoint by default, high-end in conservative mode. Kit buyers get the rail-by-rail teardown with receipts.
Questions.
Is it cheaper to withdraw USD via Wise or Grey in Ghana?
Wise's 0.90-1.5% effective band edges Grey's 1.95-2.00% on typical freelance amounts, though Grey's MoMo integration is faster for cash-in-hand. On $1,200/month the annual gap is roughly $50-90 — verify both on your amount in the calculator.
How much does Payoneer charge to withdraw to a Ghanaian bank?
Payoneer withdrawal runs roughly 1-2% plus the FX spread — up to 3.15% all-in on the corridor. On $1,200/month that is up to ~$378/year versus ~$108 on Wise's band.
What happened to e-levy on MoMo withdrawals?
e-levy was abolished on 2 April 2025. MTN MoMo send and withdraw tariffs still apply (1.5-5% band), but the e-levy line item is gone. Guides quoting e-levy are out of date.
Should I hold USD instead of converting every month?
If your expenses are in cedis, you convert what you need and hold the rest only when you have a reason to (rate view, USD expenses, future investment). Holding in a multi-currency balance avoids repeat conversion fees; holding cash under a mattress does not. See the holding-USD page for the framework.
