Getting paid in US dollars from Ghana.
Your client pays in USD. Between their bank and your MoMo or cedis account sits two to eight extraction points — platform commission, receiving fee, FX spread, cashout tariff. Here is every rail available to you in 2026, with the all-in band each one actually costs. Run your invoice through the calculator for your exact number.
Ghana rails, all-in cost.
What changed in Ghana this year.
Three things. e-levy was abolished on 2 April 2025 — mobile-money transfers of foreign-sourced income no longer carry that line item, which removes roughly 1-1.5% from the MoMo cashout leg that older guides still quote. Verify with your MoMo provider: tariffs still apply on send/withdraw, only the e-levy line is gone.
Newer USD rails (Grey, Raenest, LemFi) hold a 1.95-2.00% band against Payoneer's up-to-3.15% on the same corridor — the spread is in the FX conversion, not a headline fee. Every provider publishes a mid-market or near-mid rate; the difference between their rate and the Bank of Ghana interbank reference is your real cost. The calculator uses the band, not the marketing page.
SWIFT is the rail to avoid for recurring invoices. A $300 invoice through SWIFT can lose $15-50 to intermediary banks before FX — that is 5-17% on a single small transfer. Use it for large one-off settlements only, if at all. For monthly client work, Wise or Grey on the direct band will beat it every time. The full receive-from-abroad walk-through covers the setup steps.
Your number, not our bands.
Bands are conservative ranges. Your invoice size, currency pair and withdrawal frequency produce a specific number — the calculator gives it in 20 seconds. Kit buyers recover $270 in stage one (payout rail) and $2,436 in stage two (direct billing) on the median profile.
Questions.
What is the cheapest way to receive USD in Ghana in 2026?
For recurring freelance invoices under $1,000, Wise (0.90-1.5% effective all-in) or the newer virtual-account rails Grey/Raenest (1.95-2.00% band) beat Payoneer (up to 3.15%) and SWIFT (3-9% + $15-50 flat). MTN MoMo is the cashout leg, not the receiving leg.
Can a US company pay me directly into my Ghanaian bank account?
Yes, via SWIFT — but banks charge $15-50 intermediary fees plus a 1-4% FX spread, so on invoices under $1,000 it is almost always the most expensive option. Ask your bank for the full fee schedule including correspondent charges before sharing wire instructions.
Does e-levy still apply to freelance income received on MoMo?
No. e-levy was abolished on 2 April 2025. MoMo send and withdraw tariffs still apply — budget the 1.5-5% band for cashout — but the e-levy line item is gone. Older guides quoting e-levy are out of date.
Should I register a US LLC to receive payments in Ghana?
It is optional at low volumes. A US LLC plus Stripe Atlas or Mercury can simplify US-client trust and some payment tools, but adds $500+ setup, annual filings and tax complexity. At median freelance volumes the payout-rail fix (stage one) recovers more than the LLC costs in year one. See the US LLC route page for the full trade-off.
