US client to Kenya, step by step.
The complete path a $1,000 invoice travels from a US company's bank to your M-Pesa or KES account — which details you give them, how long it takes, what each leg costs. No wire required.
The $1,000 invoice path.
Timing and the two-week Fiverr trap.
Clean path timing: ACH 1-3 business days → balance instant on arrival → conversion instant → M-Pesa minutes. Total: under a week, most of it the client's bank's clock. Compare Fiverr: 14-day clearance on new sellers, then Payoneer, then withdrawal — and 22-28% gone. Same client, same work.
The setup order that avoids rework: (1) open the USD receiving account (Wise or Grey — both serve Kenya), (2) test with a $50 invoice or a friend's transfer to confirm the details work end-to-end, (3) only then send the first client invoice with live instructions. The Kit's Kenya walkthrough is the checklist version with screenshots.
The conversion decision is yours, not the platform's. On arrival, the USD sits in your balance — convert immediately for certainty, or hold with a reason (framework). What you do not do: let an unattended auto-conversion at a wide spread decide for you. Check the rate shown against the mid-market reference before confirming.
The invoice block, pre-written.
Rails Pack (GH¢60) includes the Kenya payment-path invoice, the ACH instruction block, and the W-8BEN note clients ask for. Full Kit adds the off-platform client system.
Questions.
How does a US client pay me in Kenya without wire fees?
They ACH to your Wise USD details or Grey virtual USD account — a domestic US transfer, usually $0 client-side, 1-3 business days. You convert to KES when ready. No SWIFT, no $20-55 flats.
How long does the full path take?
ACH 1-3 business days + instant credit on arrival + instant conversion + M-Pesa cashout in minutes. Under a week end-to-end, mostly the client bank's clock.
What fees should I quote the client?
None, if they ACH to a USD account — the transfer is free on their side; your conversion/cashout (0.90-4.5% band) is your cost of doing business, priced into your rate. Do not line-item fees clients do not incur; it invites negotiation.
Do I need a W-8BEN for a US client in Kenya?
Many US companies request a W-8BEN (foreign person tax form) before first payment — it certifies you are not a US taxpayer. It is standard paperwork, not a red flag. Filled instructions are on the W-8BEN page.
