Getting paid in US dollars from Kenya.
Kenya's edge is the M-Pesa cashout leg — minutes to cash, banded tariffs at 1-4.5%. The cost decision is upstream: which rail receives your USD, and what the FX spread to KES does to the invoice. Here is the 2026 map.
Kenya rails, all-in cost.
The Kenyan corridor in three legs.
Leg one — receiving. Wise remains the low-cost standard (0.90-1.5% effective including FX on typical freelance amounts). Grey, Raenest and LemFi all serve Kenya with virtual USD accounts; their 2-7% band includes the KES conversion. Payoneer works but stacks receiving + withdrawal fees. SWIFT into a KES bank account runs 4-10% + $20-55 flats — reserve it for large one-off settlements.
Leg two — FX to KES. The spread between the provider rate and interbank is invisible in the marketing page and very visible on the receipt. On a $1,000 invoice, a 1.5% spread difference is $15 — $180 a year at monthly volume. This is why we band newer rails at 2-7% rather than quoting a single number: your cashout method and timing inside the band determine where you land.
Leg three — M-Pesa cashout. Tariffs are banded by amount (roughly 1-4.5% for typical invoice sizes, plus small flat components at the high end). It is the fastest cash in the market and the correct choice for lumpy cashflow; for steady monthly withdrawals, converting directly to a KES bank account via the rail's own cashout is usually cheaper. See how withdrawal frequency changes the annual number.
Your M-Pesa number is not a payment rail.
Kenyan freelancers in our model recover $270 a year in stage one (rail switch) and $2,436 in stage two (off-platform billing). Run your invoice and see your split.
Questions.
Can a US client pay my M-Pesa number directly?
No. M-Pesa is mobile money, not an international receiving rail. USD arrives via Wise, Payoneer or a virtual USD account; you then cash out to M-Pesa or a KES bank account.
Is Wise or Payoneer cheaper for Kenyan freelancers?
Wise is typically cheaper at 0.90-1.5% effective all-in versus Payoneer's up-to-3.15% plus a separate cashout. The gap widens with invoice frequency. Verify both on your actual amount — the calculator uses corridor bands.
How do I avoid the SWIFT fees on US client payments?
Do not use SWIFT for freelance invoices. A US client can ACH-transfer to your virtual USD account (Grey, Raenest, Cleva) or pay Wise's USD details for a fraction of the $20-55 SWIFT flats plus 4-10% all-in band.
Does Grey work in Kenya?
Yes — Grey, Raenest and LemFi all serve Kenyan residents with USD virtual accounts and KES cashout. Fiverr, Upwork, Payoneer and Wise also operate in the corridor. Availability per rail is encoded in the calculator's rail picker.
