Portfolio before clients.
Every freelancer hits the loop: clients want proof, proof needs clients. Break it with work you chose, not work you were given — spec projects, teardowns and personal products, packaged in the case-study format US clients actually read.
What replaces "past clients".
Producing proof with zero budget.
Teardowns are the fastest cold-start proof. Pick a product in your niche (ideally one your target client segment uses), find one real usability/revenue/design leak, write it up in one page with screenshots — then send it to that product's team as your cold-outreach value asset. The teardown is simultaneously portfolio piece, proof artifact and opener. The 3-line version fits LinkedIn message 2; the full version lives in your Featured section.
Spec work only with real constraints. Invent the brief an actual business would write (audience, budget reality, platform limits), then execute to professional standards including handoff files. Self-initiated beats unpaid-spec-for-a-real-brand (which raises ethical and legal questions — do not present spec as commissioned work, ever).
Personal products with visible traction — a tool, a template pack, a micro-SaaS — prove shipping ability and business sense in one artifact. Even modest numbers (users, downloads, revenue) beat adjectives. Then wire the whole thing together: profile positioning (LinkedIn), first outreach (cold email), first invoice when it lands (template), trust friction handled (stack). The Kit's portfolio module builds the case-study format with fill-in structure.
Case studies, structured.
The Kit includes the case-study template (problem → decisions → outcome), the teardown one-pager format, and the profile checklist. $19 founding through Dec 31, 14-day refund.
Questions.
Do spec projects look fake in a portfolio?
Only if presented vaguely or dishonestly. Label them clearly ("spec — self-initiated"), give them real constraints, and walk through decisions and outcomes like client work. Reviewers judge reasoning quality; disclosure protects your integrity.
How many projects do I need before pitching clients?
Two to three deep case studies in your target niche beats ten shallow pieces. Depth demonstrates judgment; breadth without depth reads as output volume. Add pieces only when each one covers a new proof dimension.
What do US clients actually look at in a portfolio?
Specificity of problems, quality of reasoning, outcome numbers, and communication clarity. Logos impress less than a well-argued case study — most first-time African freelancers lose on presentation polish, not on ability.
Should I do free work to get testimonials?
Avoid open-ended free work. Prefer: deeply discounted fixed-scope first project with a written agreement and testimonial clause, or spec/teardown proof. Free-without-scope invites exploitation; discounted-with-scope is a marketing cost with a defined end.
